Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Friday, Aug. 20 to Sunday, Aug. 22. Inservice day. Back Monday, Aug. 23.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 6. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 7.
• 10 days off in a row: Friday, Oct. 1 to Sunday, Oct. 10. Fall intersession. Back Monday, Oct. 11.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 30 to Monday, Nov. 1. Inservice day. Back Tuesday, Nov. 2.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 28. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 29.
• 18.5 days off in a row: Thursday, Dec. 16 at early dismissal to Monday, Jan. 3. Exam half day, Remediation day (intersession), winter break and weather makeup day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 4.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 15 to Monday, Jan. 17. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 18.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Feb. 12 to Monday, Feb. 14. Presidents Day (weather makeup day). Back Tuesday, Feb. 15.
• 11 days off in a row: Thursday, March 23 to Sunday, April 2. Remediation days (intersession) and spring break. Back Monday, April 3.
• 4-day weekend: Friday, April 14 to Monday, April 17. Inservice day and Holiday (Easter Monday). Back Tuesday, April 18.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Thirteen weeks have fewer than five school days, and five weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Three of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on some federal holidays: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 11), Veterans Day (Thursday, Nov. 11) and Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day) (Monday, Feb. 21). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The district calendar does not list parent-teacher conferences.
• The school year calendar lists no testing dates; the district posts a separate testing calendar.
• Some days off may change: weather makeup day, Jan. 3 (No school unless the district needs it to make up a day lost to weather) and Presidents Day (weather makeup day), Feb. 14 (No school unless the district needs it to make up a day lost to weather).
• The last day can move. May 25, or Friday, May 26 if the district needs that weather makeup day. The planned last day is Thursday, May 25; it can fall from Thursday, May 25 to Friday, May 26.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows weather makeup day (May 26) and Memorial Day (May 29). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Wednesday, July 28, 2027. The last day is Thursday, May 25, 2028, with early dismissal, as planned. It can fall anywhere from Thursday, May 25 to Friday, May 26: May 25, or Friday, May 26 if the district needs that weather makeup day.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run July 22 to 27.

What the district notes

• District 50 runs a modified calendar with intersessions: a week and a day off in the fall (Oct. 1-8) and extra days off before winter break (Dec. 17) and spring break (March 23-24). The calendar marks Oct. 1, Dec. 17 and March 23-24 as remediation days; the rest of the intersession is a break for all students. Check with your school if your child is asked to attend remediation.
• The three weather makeup days (Monday, Jan. 3, Presidents Day, Feb. 14, and Friday, May 26) are days off unless the district needs them. If May 26 is used, it becomes the last day of school.
• Monday, April 17, the day after Easter, is a holiday with schools and offices closed, and Friday, April 14 is an inservice day, so students have a four-day weekend.

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked each one against the Spanish edition of the 2027-2028 calendar, the District 50 School Year Calendars page and the District 50 newsletter (D50 Details, September 2025).
