Days off for some schools only

These are school days for everyone else, so they are not in the table or the counts above.

Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Oct. 8 to Sunday, Oct. 11. Teacher PD day (no school for students) and No school for students or staff. Back Monday, Oct. 12.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Nov. 26 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 16 days off in a row: Saturday, Dec. 19 to Sunday, Jan. 3. Winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 4.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 23 to Monday, Jan. 25. Staff day (no school for students). Back Tuesday, Jan. 26.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Feb. 13 to Sunday, Feb. 21. Mid-winter break. Back Monday, Feb. 22.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Twelve weeks have fewer than five school days, and four weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Three of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

• Monday, Jan. 25: staff day (no school for students)
• Friday, March 19: staff day (no school for students)

Makeup days

Scheduled weather makeup day, Friday, March 26 (a school day only if needed to make up a weather closure) and Scheduled weather makeup day, Friday, May 28 (a school day only if needed to make up a weather closure).

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• Days off for some schools only: Monday, Aug. 31, kindergarten only, Tuesday, Sept. 1 to Wednesday, Sept. 2, kindergarten only and Monday, Nov. 23 to Wednesday, Nov. 25, elementary schools only. Other schools are open. The list is under Vacations and holidays.
• Some days off may change: weather makeup day (no school unless needed), March 26 (A school day only if needed to make up a weather closure) and weather makeup day (no school unless needed), May 28 (A school day only if needed to make up a weather closure).
• After the last day, the calendar still shows Juneteenth (observed) (June 18). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026. The last day is Thursday, June 17, 2027, with early dismissal.

What the district notes

• March 26 and May 28 are scheduled weather makeup days. The district's rule: they are used for school if schools close for weather during the year; if they are not needed, they are days off. This page counts them as days off, which gives 180 school days.
• Kindergarten starts with everyone on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Kindergartners then have no school Monday, Aug. 31 to Wednesday, Sept. 2 for kindergarten conferences.
• Mercer Island High School quarters end Friday, Oct. 30, Friday, Jan. 22 and Friday, March 26 (a weather makeup day). Islander Middle School and elementary trimesters end Wednesday, Nov. 25 and Thursday, March 18. The calendar does not print the final quarter or trimester end.
• On Wednesday, Nov. 25, elementary students have no school (conferences), and middle and high school students have a half day; MIHS starts at its regular time.
• Half-day dismissal times are not printed on the calendar; check your school's bell schedule.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked each one against the district's Calendar page, the district's web calendar feeds and the district's news post on weather makeup days.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
