Teacher workdays: no school for students
Five of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

- School is open on a federal holiday: Veterans Day (Thursday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
- The district calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days.
- The district calendar prints no testing dates. NISD posts its assessment calendars on a separate Testing page.
- After the last day, the calendar still shows teacher work day (May 25), Memorial Day (May 29), Juneteenth holiday (June 19) and Independence Day holiday (July 4). Students are already out.
First and last day of school
The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 9, 2027. The last day is Wednesday, May 24, 2028.
Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 2 to 6.
Grading periods
NISD prints the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grading periods as starting Oct. 12, Jan. 3 and March 13. Those are teacher planning days with no school, so the table starts each one on the first school day after. Semesters: Aug. 9 to Dec. 17 and Jan. 3 to May 24.

What the district notes
- Oct. 8 and 11 are marked "Student Holiday/Teacher Exchange", and Oct. 12 is a teacher planning day. With the weekend, students are off five days in a row, Friday to Tuesday.
- Feb. 22 is a staff development day with no school, and also the bad weather makeup day. If NISD loses a day to weather, students may have school that day.
- Students come back from winter break and spring break a day later than staff: Jan. 3 and March 13 are teacher planning days.
