Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 6. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 7.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 11. Yom Kippur and Columbus Day. Back Tuesday, Oct. 12.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 29 to Sunday, Oct. 31. Diwali. Back Monday, Nov. 1.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov. 7. NJEA Convention. Back Monday, Nov. 8.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Fifteen weeks have fewer than five school days, and two weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Two of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

First emergency makeup day, Thursday, May 25 (a school day if one or more emergency days are used), Second emergency makeup day, Tuesday, May 30 (a school day if two or more emergency days are used), Third emergency makeup day, Friday, May 26 (a school day if three or more emergency days are used) and Fourth emergency makeup day (spring break, then later spring break days), Monday, April 10 (only if more than three emergency days are used).

Also worth knowing

• School is open on some federal holidays: Veterans Day (Thursday, Nov. 11) and Juneteenth (Monday, June 19). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference dates.
• The calendar prints no testing dates.
• Some days off may change: spring break, April 10 to 14 (May be shortened if more than three emergency days are used: Monday, April 10 is used first, then the days after it), Unused emergency day (closed if not needed), May 25 (Closed only if no emergency days are used; it becomes a school day once one emergency day is used), Unused emergency day (closed if not needed), May 26 (Closed unless three or more emergency days are used) and Unused emergency day (closed if not needed), May 30 (Closed if no emergency days or only one is used; it becomes a school day if two or more emergency days are used).
• After the last day, the calendar still shows Closing day for teachers (June 21). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 30, 2027. The last day is Tuesday, June 20, 2028, with early dismissal.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 25 to 27.

What the district notes

• The calendar counts 184 student days less three emergency days, 181 in all, and 187 teacher days. The 181 counts May 25, May 26 and May 30 as days off.
• Minimum day dismissal times: PreK and K-5 at 12:45 p.m., grades 6-8 at 12:15 p.m.*, grades 9-12 at 12:27 p.m. and STEPSS at 1 p.m. A full day ends at 2 p.m. (PreK), 3 p.m. (K-5), 2:53 p.m. (6-8), 3:30 p.m. (9-12) and 3 p.m. (STEPSS).
• Ridgewood High School graduation is Tuesday, June 20, 2028, the last day of school.
• The district closes for Juneteenth on Friday, June 16. Monday, June 19, the federal holiday, is a school day.
• The calendar also marks Rosh Hashanah (Oct. 2), Eid al-Fitr (Feb. 26) and Easter (April 16). All fall on a weekend.
• * The district's 2027-28 calendar prints 2:15 p.m. for grades 6-8 on minimum days. We think that is a typo for 12:15 p.m.: 2:15 p.m. is only 38 minutes before a full day ends at 2:53 p.m., and the 2026-27 calendar gave 12:15 p.m. Confirm the time with your middle school.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked our count of every school day against the day counts the district prints. They match.
