Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 19 to Monday, Sept. 21. Yom Kippur. Back Tuesday, Sept. 22.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 12. Columbus Day, staff professional development (no school for students). Back Tuesday, Oct. 13.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Nov. 5 to Sunday, Nov. 8. NJEA Convention. Back Monday, Nov. 9.
• 4.5-day weekend: Wednesday, Nov. 25 at early dismissal to Sunday, Nov. 29. Day before Thanksgiving (minimum day) and Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 11.5 days off in a row: Wednesday, Dec. 23 at early dismissal to Sunday, Jan. 3. Minimum day before winter break and winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 4.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.
• 5.5 days off in a row: Friday, Feb. 12 at early dismissal to Wednesday, Feb. 17. Minimum day before February break, February break (Presidents' Day) and staff professional development day (no school for students). Back Thursday, Feb. 18.
• 10 days off in a row: Friday, March 26 to Sunday, April 4. Good Friday and spring break. Back Monday, April 5.
• 5-day weekend: Friday, May 28 to Tuesday, June 1. Unused emergency day (closed if not needed) and Memorial Day. Back Wednesday, June 2.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, June 18 to Sunday, June 20. Juneteenth. Back Monday, June 21.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Fifteen weeks have fewer than five school days, and two weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Two of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

• Monday, Oct. 12: Columbus Day, staff professional development (no school for students)
• Wednesday, Feb. 17: staff professional development day (no school for students)

Makeup days

Second emergency makeup day, Friday, May 28 (a school day only if two or more emergency days are used), First emergency makeup day, Tuesday, June 1 (a school day if one or more emergency days are used) and Third emergency makeup day (spring break, then earlier spring break days), Friday, April 2 (only if more than two emergency days are used).

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference dates. Schools set their own.
• The calendar prints no testing dates.
• Some days off may change: spring break, March 29 to April 2 (May be shortened if more than two emergency days are used: Friday, April 2 is used first, then earlier days), Unused emergency day (closed if not needed), May 28 (Closed if no emergency days or only one is used; it becomes a school day if two or more emergency days are used) and Unused emergency day (closed if not needed), June 1 (Closed only if no emergency days are used; it becomes a school day once one emergency day is used).
• After the last day, the calendar still shows Closing day for teachers (June 23). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. The last day is Tuesday, June 22, 2027, with early dismissal.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 26 to 28.

What the district notes

• The calendar counts 183 student days less two emergency days, 181 in all, and 187 teacher days. The 181 counts May 28 and June 1 as days off.
• Minimum day dismissal times: PreK and K-5 at 12:45 p.m., grades 6-8 at 12:15 p.m., grades 9-12 at 12:27 p.m. and STEPSS at 1 p.m. A full day ends at 2:30 p.m. (PreK), 3 p.m. (K-5), 2:53 p.m. (6-8), 3:30 p.m. (9-12) and 3 p.m. (STEPSS).
• Ridgewood High School graduation is Tuesday, June 22, 2027, the last day of school.
• The calendar also marks Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 12), Diwali (Nov. 8), Lunar New Year (Feb. 6), Easter (March 28) and Eid al-Adha (May 16). All fall on a weekend.
