The 2027-28 traditional calendar prints no early release days.

Schools can still send their own early dismissal notices, so watch for those.

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 6. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 7.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 11. Teacher workday. Back Tuesday, Oct. 12.
• 5-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 29 to Tuesday, Nov. 2. Teacher workdays. Back Wednesday, Nov. 3.
• 5-day weekend: Wednesday, Nov. 24 to Sunday, Nov. 28. Teacher workday and Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 29.
• 16 days off in a row: Saturday, Dec. 18 to Sunday, Jan. 2. Winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 3.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Fifteen weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Eight of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Also worth knowing

• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days.
• The calendar prints no testing windows.
• The last day can move. Makeup day 5 (June 8) extends the year if CMS needs it for closures. The planned last day is Wednesday, June 7; it can fall from Wednesday, June 7 to Thursday, June 8.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows teacher workdays (June 8). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2027. The last day is Wednesday, June 7, 2028, as planned. It can fall anywhere from Wednesday, June 7 to Thursday, June 8: Makeup day 5 (June 8) extends the year if CMS needs it for closures.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 16 to 23.

Grading periods

CMS grades in four quarters. The calendar prints each quarter's last day and its number of school days.

What the district notes

• Makeup days are used in the order listed, and the superintendent may waive up to four of them. State law also lets CMS use remote instruction for emergency closures such as bad weather.
• CMS keeps a current list of school closures and makeup days on its website (the Calendar quick link at cmsk12.org).
• This is the traditional calendar most CMS schools follow. The CPCC early and middle colleges, the UNC Charlotte early colleges and Hawthorne Academy of Health Sciences have their own 2027-28 calendars, and CMS also posts an A-day/B-day schedule.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked each one against the CMS calendar page and the CMS teacher and staff holiday and workday calendar.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
