Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 19 to Monday, Sept. 21. Teacher workday. Back Tuesday, Sept. 22.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 2 to Sunday, Oct. 4. Teacher workday. Back Monday, Oct. 5.
• 4-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 31 to Tuesday, Nov. 3. Teacher workdays. Back Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Twelve weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Seven of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days. Schools set their own.
• The calendar prints no testing windows.
• Some days off may change: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18 (Becomes a school day if needed as makeup day 1), teacher workday, Feb. 15 (Becomes a school day if needed as makeup day 2) and teacher workday, March 25 (Becomes a school day if needed as makeup day 3).
• The last day can move. Makeup days 4 and 5 (June 10 and 11) extend the year if CMS needs them for closures. The planned last day is Wednesday, June 9; it can fall from Wednesday, June 9 to Friday, June 11.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows teacher workdays (June 10). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026. The last day is Wednesday, June 9, 2027, as planned. It can fall anywhere from Wednesday, June 9 to Friday, June 11: Makeup days 4 and 5 (June 10 and 11) extend the year if CMS needs them for closures.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 17 to 24.

Grading periods

CMS grades in four quarters. The calendar prints each quarter's last day and its number of school days.

What the district notes

• Makeup days are used in the order listed, and the superintendent may waive up to four of them. State law also lets CMS use remote instruction for emergency closures such as bad weather.
• CMS keeps a current list of school closures and makeup days on its website (the Calendar quick link at cmsk12.org).
• This is the traditional calendar most CMS schools follow. The CPCC early and middle colleges, the UNC Charlotte early colleges and Hawthorne Academy of Health Sciences have their own 2026-27 calendars, and CMS also posts a religious observance calendar and an A-day/B-day schedule.
• On early release days, the After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) opens 3 hours early and runs to 6 p.m. at each home ASEP site.

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked each one against the CMS Calendar page, the CMS teacher and staff holiday and workday calendar and the CMS 2026-2027 ASEP calendar.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
