Teacher workdays: no school for students
One of the days off is a staff day. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

First and last day of school
The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 2, 2027. The last day is Wednesday, May 24, 2028.
Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run July 27 to 30.
The district prints 180 school days. The dated calendar has 183; the difference is days each school sets itself: One Institute Day with no students, date set for each island and Two instructional days converted to non-student days for school planning and collaboration.
Grading periods
Two semesters of two quarters each. The calendar prints 43, 46, 47 and 46 quarter days (89 and 93 by semester); the 2nd quarter's 46 leaves out the Institute Day, which each island dates itself during Oct. 18 to 22. The two school planning days come out of the 182 afterward.

What the district notes
- This calendar applies to all Hawaii public schools except Holomua Elementary, which is a multi-track campus with its own calendar, and charter schools.
- Seniors' last day is no sooner than May 10, 2028.
- Christmas and New Year's Day are observed on Fridays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 2027, during winter break.

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked the first and last days, the breaks, the teacher days, the Institute Day week, Good Friday, Kuhio Day and the quarter ends against the HIDOE School Calendar page and the HIDOE Official School Calendar in Google Calendar, linked from the School Calendar page. The other dates rest on the district's calendar alone.
Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
