HIDOE vacations and holidays, 2026-27

Every day with no school for students, from the first day to the last: 14 entries and 32 weekdays in all.

Days each school sets

The district leaves these dates to each school, so they are not in the table or the .ics files. Ask your school for them.

• Two instructional days converted to non-student days for school planning and collaboration: 2 days.

HIDOE early release days

The statewide calendar prints no early release or half days. Ask your school about its own weekly schedule. Every school day on it is a full day.

Schools can still send their own early dismissal notices, so watch for those.

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends.

• 3-day weekend: Friday, Aug. 21 to Sunday, Aug. 23. Statehood Day. Back Monday, Aug. 24.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 11. Fall break. Back Monday, Oct. 12.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Nov. 26 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 17 days off in a row: Saturday, Dec. 19 to Monday, Jan. 4. Winter break and teacher workday. Back Tuesday, Jan. 5.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Feb. 6 to Monday, Feb. 8. Institute Day. Back Tuesday, Feb. 9.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Feb. 13 to Monday, Feb. 15. Presidents Day. Back Tuesday, Feb. 16.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, March 13 to Sunday, March 21. Spring break. Back Monday, March 22.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Twelve weeks have fewer than five school days, and four weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Two of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

The statewide calendar names no makeup days. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The statewide calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days. Schools set their own.
• The statewide calendar prints no testing windows.
• Not every day off is on this calendar. Two instructional days converted to non-student days for school planning and collaboration. Your school sets those dates; ask it for them.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows last day for teachers (May 28) and Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. The last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run July 28 to 31.

The district prints 180 school days. The dated calendar has 182; the difference is days each school sets itself: Two instructional days converted to non-student days for school planning and collaboration.

Grading periods

Two semesters of two quarters each. The calendar prints 89 student days in the first semester and 93 in the second, before the two school planning days come out.

What the district notes

• This calendar applies to all Hawaii public schools except Holomua Elementary, which is a multi-track campus with its own calendar, and charter schools.
• The statewide calendar printed the Institute Day as one day with no students during Feb. 8 to 12, with the date for each island to be set. The department's Google calendar now lists it on Monday, Feb. 8, 2027 for all islands.
• Commencement exercises for the Class of 2027 may be held no sooner than May 21, 2027.
• Kuhio Day (Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day) falls on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, so schools observe it on Monday, March 29.
