Teacher workdays: no school for students
Three of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days
The calendar dates no makeup days. The first five inclement weather days do not have to be made up; instruction for the second five can take place through remote learning. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 16, 2027. The last day is Thursday, May 25, 2028, with early dismissal.
Grading periods
The calendar marks the end of the 3rd quarter on Friday, March 10, a professional learning day with no school, so the last school day of the quarter is Thursday, March 9.

What the district notes
- 2027-28 is the first West Virginia school year counted in hours instead of days. Senate Bill 890, signed April 1, 2026, takes effect July 1, 2027 and rewrites W. Va. Code §18-5-45: the school year must have at least 900 instructional hours, replacing the old rule of 180 separate instructional days or an equivalent amount of instructional time. Each county sets how long its school days are, and they may vary, to reach the 900 hours. If closures leave the year short, the county adds instruction to scheduled days or schedules school on another available day. What it means for you: the school days on this page are the district's plan, and an hours-based year may have fewer or different school days than the 180-day years before it.
- * The district's 2027-28 calendar lists MLK Jr. Day as January 19, but Jan. 19, 2028 is a Wednesday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, Jan. 17, so this page shows Jan. 17 as the day off. Check with your school if you need to be sure.
- Every 2-hour early dismissal is a Faculty Senate day, except the last day: Oct. 8, Dec. 17, Feb. 18 and April 7, plus May 25, the last day.
- Students return from winter break on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
- Fall break is the whole week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 22-26.
- Jefferson High School and Washington High School hold graduation on Sunday, May 21.
- The district says the calendar may change because of new West Virginia state legislation, and with inclement weather.
