Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 4-day weekend: Friday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day weekend. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 19 to Monday, Sept. 21. Yom Kippur. Back Tuesday, Sept. 22.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 26 to Monday, Sept. 28. Teacher professional learning day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 29.
• 4-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 31 to Tuesday, Nov. 3. Wellness Day and Election Day (teacher professional learning). Back Wednesday, Nov. 4.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Nov. 7 to Monday, Nov. 9. Diwali. Back Tuesday, Nov. 10.
• 5-day weekend: Wednesday, Nov. 25 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 16 days off in a row: Saturday, Dec. 19 to Sunday, Jan. 3. Winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 4.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Twelve weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Four of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

• Monday, Jan. 25: Clerical day (no school for students)
• Tuesday, Feb. 16: teacher professional learning day

Makeup days

The calendar names no makeup or inclement weather days. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on some federal holidays: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12) and Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days. Schools set their own.
• The calendar prints no testing windows.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows staff clerical day (June 7) and Juneteenth (June 17). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 24, 2026 for grades 1-5, grade 6, grade 9 and half of pre-K and kindergarten and Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026 for grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 and the other half of pre-K and kindergarten. The last day is Friday, June 4, 2027, with early dismissal.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 17 to 21.

Grading periods

HCPS grades in nine-week quarters. The calendar circles each quarter's last day; each quarter starts on the next school day.

What the district notes

• Staggered start, new for 2026-27: on Monday, Aug. 24, half of pre-K and kindergarten students and all students in grades 1-5, 6 and 9 start. On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the other half of pre-K and kindergarten and grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 start, and grades 1-5, 6 and 9 attend too. From Wednesday, Aug. 26, all students attend. The Spanish page splits pre-K and kindergarten by last name (A to M on Monday, N to Z on Tuesday); check with your school.
• Nov. 2 and Feb. 15 are Wellness Days: schools and central offices are closed.
• The three half days (Oct. 28, March 26 and June 4) end a quarter. Oct. 28 and March 26 are also flexible staff clerical days, which may be in the building or remote.
• Under HCPS policy, student absences for religious holidays that are not days off are excused.
• Leave and holiday schedules vary by employee group; the calendar shows the student year. HCPS has also posted its 2027-28 calendar.

We read every date off the district's own calendar image twice: once whole, cell by cell against its legend, and once on zoomed crops of each month. Then we checked each one against the HCPS 2026-2027 School Calendar page, the Spanish edition of the calendar page and the HCPS Google Calendar.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
