Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 4-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 12. Student holiday (staff development) and Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day. Back Tuesday, Oct. 13.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.

• 3-day weekend: Friday, April 23 to Sunday, April 25. Battle of Flowers (Fiesta). Back Monday, April 26.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Ten weeks have fewer than five school days, and four weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

One of the days off is a staff day. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

• Friday, Oct. 9: student holiday (staff development)

Makeup days

Severe weather makeup day (Presidents Day, if needed), Monday, Feb. 15 and Severe weather makeup day (Battle of Flowers, if needed), Friday, April 23.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The instructional calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days. Schools set their own.
• The instructional calendar prints no testing windows. NEISD posts a separate 2026-27 District Testing Calendar on its Calendars page.
• Some days off may change: Presidents Day, Feb. 15 (a severe weather makeup day; becomes a school day if needed to make up a closure) and Battle of Flowers (Fiesta), April 23 (a severe weather makeup day; becomes a school day if needed to make up a closure).
• After the last day, the calendar still shows staff development day (May 28) and Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 17, 2026. The last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 6 to 14.

The district prints 175 instructional days across the quarters. Our count of the calendar matches.

Grading periods

NEISD has four grading periods. The calendar prints each one's dates and day count. Semester 1 runs Aug. 17 to Dec. 18 (81 days) and semester 2 runs Jan. 5 to May 27 (94 days).

What the district notes

• Early release times by school: early start elementary schools let out at 12:30 p.m., later start elementary schools at 1:05 p.m., middle schools at 1:35 p.m. and high schools at 2:10 p.m. Each is 2 hours 15 minutes before the regular end of the day.
• Nov. 23 and 24, the first two days of Thanksgiving break, are Teacher Choice Days. Students are off all week.
• This is the calendar for traditional campuses. Castle Hills Elementary runs a year-round calendar (first day July 15, 2026), and the Academy of Creative Education (ACE) runs an extended calendar (first day July 27, 2026). Each has its own calendar on the NEISD Calendars page.
• NEISD says academic calendars are subject to change and to check the date at the bottom for the latest version.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked the first and last day, every holiday and break, and every early release against the NEISD Calendars page and the NEISD Start & End Times page. The other dates rest on the district's calendar alone.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
