Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 19 to Monday, Sept. 21. Yom Kippur. Back Tuesday, Sept. 22.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 12. Columbus Day. Back Tuesday, Oct. 13.
• 5.5 days off in a row: Tuesday, Nov. 24 at early dismissal to Sunday, Nov. 29. Emergency early dismissal drill and Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Dec. 4 to Sunday, Dec. 6. Parent-teacher conference day (no classes). Back Monday, Dec. 7.
• 11 days off in a row: Thursday, Dec. 24 to Sunday, Jan. 3. Winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 4.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Sixteen weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

One of the days off is a staff day. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Snow makeup day (if needed), Friday, May 28 (a school day unless at least one snow day is still unused by May 1).

Also worth knowing

• Days off for some schools only: Tuesday, Sept. 1, kindergarten only and Friday, Nov. 20, grades K-6 (elementary schools) only. Other schools are open. The list is under Vacations and holidays.
• Some days off may change: Memorial Day recess (if a snow day is unused), May 28 (Schools close May 28 only if at least one snow day is still unused by May 1; otherwise it is a school day).

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. The last day is Friday, June 25, 2027.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 26 to 27.

Grading periods

Grades 7-12 (Manhasset Secondary School). Elementary report cards for kindergarten through grade 6 are posted three times a year: fall, spring and right after school closes in June.

What the district notes

• Kindergarten starts a day later. Sept. 1 is kindergarten parent-teacher conferences and a kindergarten parent orientation; kindergarten's first full day is Wednesday, Sept. 2.
• Student days differ by grade: 181 for grades 7-12, 180 for grades 1-6 and 179 for kindergarten, because of the conference days. Those totals count Friday, May 28 as a school day; it becomes a day off if a snow day is still unused by May 1.
• Seniors' last day of classes is Thursday, June 10. The last day of middle and high school classes is Monday, June 14, before finals and Regents exams. Graduation is Thursday, June 17.
• If weather delays the opening of school by one or two hours, buses run one or two hours late too. The booklet lists each school's delayed start times.
• The calendar also marks Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 12 and 13), Diwali (Nov. 8), Lunar New Year (Feb. 6), Easter (March 28) and Orthodox Easter (May 2), all on weekends, and the first day of Passover (April 22), in spring break.
