Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 12. Columbus Day. Back Tuesday, Oct. 13.
• 2.5-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 23 at early dismissal to Sunday, Oct. 25. SIP early release day. Back Monday, Oct. 26.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Parent-teacher conferences (no school) and Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 17.5 days off in a row: Friday, Dec. 18 at early dismissal to Monday, Jan. 4. SIP early release day and winter break. Back Tuesday, Jan. 5.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.
• 4.5-day weekend: Thursday, Feb. 11 at early dismissal to Monday, Feb. 15. SIP early release day, No school (non-attendance day) and Presidents Day. Back Tuesday, Feb. 16.

One early release on a Friday or Monday makes a 2.5-day weekend.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Ten weeks have fewer than five school days, and four weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

One of the days off is a staff day. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

The calendar dates no makeup days. Up to five emergency days are added at the end of the year: the last day is May 27 if none are used and June 4 if all five are. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The District 158 calendar prints no testing dates.
• The last day can move. May 27 if no emergency days are used, or as late as Friday, June 4 if all five emergency days are used. The planned last day is Thursday, May 27; it can fall from Thursday, May 27 to Friday, June 4.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026 for grades 1-12 and Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026 for kindergarten. The last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027, with early dismissal, as planned. It can fall anywhere from Thursday, May 27 to Friday, June 4: May 27 if no emergency days are used, or as late as Friday, June 4 if all five emergency days are used.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 17 to 18.

What the district notes

• Grades 1-12 start Wednesday, Aug. 19, kindergarten Thursday, Aug. 20 and early childhood (ECC) Friday, Aug. 21.
• Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11) and Casimir Pulaski Day (Monday, March 1) are waived holidays: school is in session.
• SIP early release days: middle and high schools dismiss at 12:30 p.m., Martin Elementary at 12:55 p.m. and the other elementary schools at 1:30 p.m.
• Parent-teacher conferences are Monday, Nov. 23 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Tuesday, Nov. 24 (7 a.m. to noon), with no school both days, so Thanksgiving week is a full week off.
• Early childhood (ECC) parent education days are Sept. 22, Oct. 23, Dec. 18, Feb. 11, March 1-2 (ECC conferences, no school for ECC students), April 22 (no school for ECC students) and May 27.
• Huntley High School graduation is Saturday, May 22. Eighth grade promotion is May 26 at Marlowe Middle School and May 27 at Heineman Middle School.
