On an iPhone

Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 12. Teacher workday. Back Tuesday, Oct. 13.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 18.5 days off in a row: Friday, Dec. 18 at early dismissal to Tuesday, Jan. 5. Early dismissal (end of 2nd quarter), winter break, teacher workday and District PD day. Back Wednesday, Jan. 6.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Feb. 13 to Monday, Feb. 15. Presidents Day. Back Tuesday, Feb. 16.
• 10 days off in a row: Saturday, March 13 to Monday, March 22. Spring break and teacher workday. Back Tuesday, March 23.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, May 21 at early dismissal to Sunday, May 23. Early dismissal. Monday, May 24, an early release day.

One early release on a Friday or Monday makes a 2.5-day weekend.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Seven weeks have fewer than five school days, and four weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Four of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

Weather makeup day #1 (if needed), Tuesday, Jan. 5 (only if needed after school closings for bad weather; otherwise no school for students), Weather makeup day #2 (if needed), Monday, Jan. 4 (only if needed after school closings for bad weather; otherwise no school for students), Weather makeup day #3 (if needed), Monday, Oct. 12 (only if needed after school closings for bad weather; otherwise no school for students), Weather makeup day #4 (if needed), Monday, March 22 (only if needed after school closings for bad weather; otherwise no school for students) and Weather makeup day #5 (if needed), Wednesday, May 26 (only if all five makeup days are needed; the block calendar prints May 27 for this day).

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no parent-teacher conference days. Schools set their own.
• The student calendar prints no testing dates. SCPS posts a separate District Assessment Calendar.
• Some days off may change: teacher workday, Oct. 12 (Student makeup day #3 if needed for bad weather; otherwise no school for students), teacher workday, Jan. 4 (Student makeup day #2 if needed for bad weather; otherwise no school for students), District PD day, Jan. 5 (Student makeup day #1 if needed for bad weather; otherwise no school for students) and teacher workday, March 22 (Student makeup day #4 if needed for bad weather; otherwise no school for students).
• The last day can move. If all five weather makeup days are needed, the fifth comes after May 25: May 26 in the district's text calendar and iCal file, May 27 in its block calendar. The planned last day is Tuesday, May 25; it can fall from Tuesday, May 25 to Thursday, May 27.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows teacher workdays (post-planning) (May 26) and Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 10, 2026. The last day is Tuesday, May 25, 2027, with early dismissal, as planned. It can fall anywhere from Tuesday, May 25 to Thursday, May 27: If all five weather makeup days are needed, the fifth comes after May 25: May 26 in the district's text calendar and iCal file, May 27 in its block calendar.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 4 to 7.

The district prints 180 instructional days across the quarters. Our count of the calendar matches.

Grading periods

SCPS grades in four quarters. The calendar prints each quarter's dates and day count: 88 days in the first semester and 92 in the second.

What the district notes

• Weather makeup days are used in this order: Jan. 5, Jan. 4, Oct. 12, March 22, then a fifth day after the last day of school. Until one is needed, each is a day with no school for students.
• The calendar prints no early dismissal times. SCPS posts early dismissal times by school level on its Early Dismissals page; when we checked, it still showed the May 2026 schedule.
• "Schools Closed" means no school for teachers or students; "Schools Closed for Students" means teachers work; "School System Closed" means the district office is closed too.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked each one against the SCPS text version of the student calendar, the SCPS Calendar page, the SCPS iCal version of the student calendar and the SCPS Early Dismissals page.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
