SMUSD early release days

The district calendar prints no early release or minimum days. Each school sets its own minimum days (see Calendar notes).

Schools can still send their own early dismissal notices, so watch for those.

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 9 days off in a row: Saturday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 29. Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 16 days off in a row: Saturday, Dec. 19 to Sunday, Jan. 3. Winter break. Back Monday, Jan. 4.
• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Jan. 16 to Monday, Jan. 18. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Back Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Eight weeks have fewer than five school days, and five weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Three of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

• Wednesday, March 17: professional development day (no school for students)

Makeup days

The calendar names no makeup days. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on a federal holiday: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The district calendar prints no parent-teacher conference dates. Schools set their own.
• The calendar prints no testing dates.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026. The last day is Thursday, June 3, 2027.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 10 to 11.

What the district notes

• Minimum days are set by each school. The schools' calendars list them, for example TK-5 minimum days during elementary conference week, Nov. 16 to 20, and a minimum day at all four schools on the last day, June 3.
• The calendar counts 180 student days, plus one teacher prep day and four full professional development days, 185 teacher work days in all. Under each month, the first number is student days and the second is teacher work days.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked every day off and the first and last day against the district's Academic Calendars page and the SMUSD Website Master Calendar. The other dates rest on the district's calendar alone.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. The district's printed day counts match our own count of its calendar. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
