Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 2.5-day weekend: Friday, Sept. 11 at early dismissal to Sunday, Sept. 13. Early release day. Back Monday, Sept. 14.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 16 to Sunday, Oct. 18. Inservice day, end of 1st quarter. Back Monday, Oct. 19.
• 2.5-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 23 at early dismissal to Sunday, Oct. 25. Early release day. Back Monday, Oct. 26.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Oct. 29 to Sunday, Nov. 1. Parent-teacher conferences (no school). Back Monday, Nov. 2.
• 2.5-day weekend: Friday, Nov. 20 at early dismissal to Sunday, Nov. 22. Early release day. Back Monday, Nov. 23.

Six early releases on a Friday or Monday make a 2.5-day weekend.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Eleven weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Five of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

Vacation/Make Up Day, Monday, Feb. 15 (No school unless the district needs a makeup day) and Vacation/Make Up Day, Friday, March 26 (No school unless the district needs a makeup day).

Also worth knowing

• School is open on some federal holidays: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12), Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 18). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The districtwide calendar lists no testing dates.
• Some days off may change: Vacation day (possible makeup day), Feb. 15 (May become a school day if the district needs to make up lost days) and Vacation day (possible makeup day), March 26 (May become a school day if the district needs to make up lost days).
• After the last day, the calendar still shows teacher workday after school ends (May 21) and Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. The last day is Thursday, May 20, 2027.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 12 to 18.

The district prints 170 instructional days across the quarters. Our count of the calendar matches.

Grading periods

The calendar marks each quarter's end on an inservice day with no students (Oct. 16, Jan. 4 and March 12), so the last school day of each quarter is the school day before.

What the district notes

• Early release times differ by school. The district's Start and Stop Times page lists each one; for example, Soldotna High and Kenai Central High let out at 12:45 p.m., Kenai Middle at 12:57 p.m., Homer High and Homer Middle at 2:20 p.m.
• Some schools follow their own variance calendars for 2026-27: Marathon, Nanwalek, Nikolaevsk Charter School, Port Graham, Tułen Charter School, and Razdolna, Voznesenka and Kachemak Selo. This page is the districtwide calendar.
• Students are off for two days of parent-teacher conferences in each half of the year: Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29-30, and Thursday and Friday, Feb. 11-12.

How we checked these dates

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked our count of every school day against the day counts the district prints. They match.

Every weekday on this page matches its date. If the district changes its calendar, its page is the final word.
