Calendar notes: what to plan around

Long weekends and breaks

Every stretch of three or more days with no school, counting weekends. A half day next to a weekend adds half a day.

• 3-day weekend: Saturday, Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7. Labor Day. Back Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, Sept. 24 to Sunday, Sept. 27. In-service day (no school) and Vacation day. Back Monday, Sept. 28.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Oct. 30 to Sunday, Nov. 1. In-service day (no school). Back Monday, Nov. 2.
• 4.5-day weekend: Wednesday, Nov. 25 at early dismissal to Sunday, Nov. 29. Early out before Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving break. Back Monday, Nov. 30.
• 23.5 days off in a row: Friday, Dec. 18 at early dismissal to Sunday, Jan. 10. Early out, end of 1st semester, winter break and In-service day (no school). Back Monday, Jan. 11.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, Feb. 12 to Sunday, Feb. 14. In-service day (no school). Back Monday, Feb. 15.
• 3-day weekend: Friday, March 19 to Sunday, March 21. In-service day (no school). Back Monday, March 22.
• 4-day weekend: Thursday, April 15 to Sunday, April 18. In-service day (no school) and Vacation day. Back Monday, April 19.

Weeks with fewer than five school days

Nine weeks have fewer than five school days, and three weeks have none at all.

Teacher workdays: no school for students

Six of the days off are staff days. Teachers work; students stay home. Plan child care as you would for a holiday.

Makeup days

The calendar dates no makeup days. If school closes for weather, the district announces how the day is made up.

Also worth knowing

• School is open on some federal holidays: Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12), Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 18) and Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day) (Monday, Feb. 15). Banks, post offices and many offices close; school does not.
• The calendar prints no testing dates.
• After the last day, the calendar still shows Memorial Day (May 31). Students are already out.

First and last day of school

The first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026. The last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027, with early dismissal.

Teachers start sooner. Staff days before school run Aug. 18 to 26.

Grading periods

GCSD grades in quarters; the 1st semester ends with the 2nd quarter on Dec. 18. The calendar prints 81 student days for the 1st semester and 99 for the 2nd. Those counts include the in-service days, which have no students; our count of the grid gives 76 and 95.

What the district notes

• This calendar is for the schools on the Galena campus: Sidney C. Huntington School (SHS), the Galena community school, and the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA), a statewide residential high school that shares the campus with SHS high school.
• The district's statewide programs follow their own schedules. IDEA Homeschool families homeschool on a personalized, flexible plan, and iGrad Alaska students take online classes on a schedule that fits their lives. Check with your program for its dates.
• The calendar prints 180 student days. That total counts the nine in-service days (Aug. 21, 24 and 25, Sept. 24, Oct. 30, Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 19 and April 15), which the grid marks as in-service with no students. Students attend school on 171 days, and this page follows the grid.
• Winter break runs Dec. 21 to Jan. 7, and Friday, Jan. 8 is an in-service day, so classes resume Monday, Jan. 11.
• There is no spring break. April 15 (in-service) and April 16 (vacation day) make a four-day weekend.
• Mid-quarter checks fall on Sept. 22, Nov. 18, Feb. 10 and April 20. School is open.
• Graduation is Wednesday, May 26, the day before the last day.

We read every date off the district's own calendar twice: once from the PDF's text and once from the image, cell by cell against its legend. Then we checked the first day, every holiday, break and vacation day, the early outs, most in-service days and quarter ends against the GCSD District Calendar page, the GCSD About Us page (for which schools this calendar covers), the iGrad Alaska home page (for its schedule) and the IDEA Homeschool home page (for its schedule). The other dates rest on the district's calendar alone.
